Challenge
- After a long time, new treatment options are becoming available for patients with atopic dermatitis
- There is a current need to assess which patients and sub-groups of patients are being sub-optimally treated with current options
Solution
- A study describing patient characteristics and treatment patterns was undertaken using the MarketScan Commerical Claims database
- In particular, sub-groups based on gender and age were examined for treatments received
Outcome
- The study found that steroid prescriptions were most frequent amongst women of child bearing age, indicating that the disease was less well managed amongst these patients
- In addition, women in this age group were less likely to receive treatment with newer biologic therapies
